Sea Turtles

Here on the island, there are several sandy beaches where sea turtles come and lay their eggs. On one of the beaches called Alagadi Beach each year volunteer students from around the world come to help these animals.

There are two varieties: Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas. They lay their eggs in June-August, and the young will arrive in mid-July to October.

You get to be there when they lay their eggs, and when they hatch.

Chelonia mydas can be up to 1.40 meters long and can weigh between 100 -150 kg. It lays up to 200 eggs per nest and eats sea grass.

Caretta Caretta is a little smaller than the Green Sea Turtle, and can be up to 1 meter long and weighs between 100 – 120 kg. It eats other fish and crabs. One can also “adopt” a turtle.
